Interlock Fabric

interlock fabric types from turkish prodducer

 What is Interlock Fabric?

Interlock fabric is a double-layered textile knitted on double-plate circular knitting machines. When stretched, only the loops on the right side are visible. It has a structure where a full stitch aligns with an empty stitch, creating a strong and stable fabric.

Characteristics of Interlock Fabric

Interlock fabric has several distinctive features that make it suitable for various applications:

  • Commonly used in innerwear, summer and winter sportswear.
  • Preferred in medical apparel.
  • Can be distinguished from rib fabric by stretching it widthwise—if the loops are aligned, it is interlock fabric.
  • Has the same appearance on both the front and back sides.
  • Offers a firm structure.
  • Stretches in a horizontal direction.
  • Maintains its shape exceptionally well.
  • Heavier in weight compared to single jersey fabrics.
  • Contains air between the front and back layers, enhancing insulation.

What is Ponte di Roma (Structured Interlock)?

Structured interlock fabric, also known as Ponte di Roma, is produced using stitch and tuck techniques, creating a fabric with limited elasticity:

  • Appears the same on both sides.
  • Has a limited range of textures and designs.
  • Absorbs moisture efficiently.
  • Loops may unravel when stretched excessively.
  • Shares similar characteristics with standard interlock fabric.

Various types of structured interlock fabric include polyester-based structured interlock, yarn-dyed structured interlock, melange striped structured interlock, and ringed structured interlock fabrics.

How to Wash Interlock Fabric?

Interlock fabric should be washed with care at temperatures below 40°C (104°F) to maintain its integrity:

  • Use a delicate wash cycle.
  • Avoid excessive wringing.
  • Do not dry under direct sunlight.
  • Keep away from chlorinated water.
  • Avoid using bleach or use it cautiously.

Interlock fabric is easy to care for when washed at moderate temperatures.

Where is Interlock Fabric Used?

Interlock fabric is widely used in baby clothing and sportswear. Some common applications include:

  • Pajama sets
  • Jackets
  • Nightgowns
  • Robes
  • Activewear
  • Children's clothing
  • Swimwear

The most common usage is in baby apparel, including hats, outfits, and tracksuits. Due to its ability to absorb moisture and allow airflow, interlock fabric provides excellent thermal insulation, making it highly popular in sportswear and baby products.

Interlock fabric is hypoallergenic and resistant to fading, making it a preferred choice in the ready-to-wear fashion industry and home textiles.

Types of Interlock Fabric

Interlock fabric comes in various compositions and quality grades:

  • OE Interlock: 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
  • Combed Cotton Interlock: 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
  • Ring-Spun Interlock: 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
  • Melange Interlock: 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
  • Striped Interlock: 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
  • Structured Interlock (Ponte di Roma): 24/1 – 30/1 – 36/1 – 40/1
